Acorn Endowment & The 1927 Society Appreciation Luncheon
It is through the generous support of our donors that the UH Libraries is able to provide the services, programs and resources for the campus community. November 7, 2011 served as the first appreciation luncheon for our Acorn endowment and 1927 Society members. The Acorn program allows donors to start their own endowment at the University through a growth fund started at the Library. Those donors who belong to The 1927 Society have designated a planned gift towards the Library.

Carey C. Shuart Women's Archive & Research Collection
Through the generosity of Carey C. Shuart, the Women's Archive in Special Collections has received funding to further grow its mission well into the future. In order to honor Carey for recognizing the importance of this collection a celebration was held to officially launch the Carey C. Shuart Women's Archive and Research Collection and to appreciate the vision she has for women's history and preservation at the University.

Chi Omega Gift
On October 8th, 2011, the University of Houston Libraries celebrated the generous donation from the Chi Omega Sorority at a ribbon cutting for "The Chi Omega Cougar Corner" in the Learning Commons. This new collaborative learning space is outfitted with two high-powered computers, robust hardware and software allowing for the most interactive team-learning space for students. The women of the Chi Omega sorority Houston chapter, along with numerous alumni, celebrated the grand opening of this space demonstrating their commitment to learning and scholarship.

Hamill Foundation Multi-Media Studio
On September 29th, 2011, the University of Houston Libraries celebrated the opening of the Hamill Foundation Multimedia Studio located in the Learning Commons. The Hamill Foundation's President and CEO, Charlie Read, presented the new studio to library students, faculty and staff at the ribbon cutting. The Multi-media Studio is a professional grade audio recording facility with two soundproof chambers to separate the performer from the producer. Users can record themselves speaking, singing, playing small instruments, or doing any kind of broadcast practice work that requires a performance and production room.
The Elizabeth Rockwell Heritage Lecture
The Elizabeth Rockwell Heritage Lecture serves as a forum to showcase achievements and successes of the University of Houston and its people. On October 5th, 2011, the UH Libraries was proud to have Mr. Melvyn Wolff, Chairman of Star Furniture and donor of the Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship, as the featured speaker. This series is held once a year, and is made possible by the generosity of UH alumna Elizabeth D. Rockwell.

Finals Mania!
If it's finals time, then the UH Libraries is helping to host the annual Finals Mania study break for University of Houston students! On December 6, 2011, nearly 1,600 students came through the Library doors to enjoy free pancakes and other delicious snacks while taking a much needed break from studying!

U.S.S. Houston Collection and Exhibit
The University of Houston Libraries are proud stewards of the Cruiser Houston Collection. The heavy cruiser USS Houston (CA-30), flagship of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet during World War II, fought bravely for her country during actions in the southwestern Pacific. On March 1, 1942, the Houston was sunk by the Japanese, and her surviving crew members were taken prisoner of war. The Cruiser Houston Collection contains over seventy boxes of archival material related to the history of the ship and her crew. A permanent exhibition in the M.D. Anderson Library tells the story of the USS Houston (CA-30), features original letters and artifacts from the ship and the POW camps, an American flag made by prisoners-of-war in Saigon, a newly restored model, and the ship's bell.

The John P. McGovern Award For Library Staff Excellence
Established October 12, 2000 by John P. McGovern, this endowment is utilized to award and recognize truly outstanding librarians and library staff members. Recipients of this award are nominated by their peers and final decision is made by the Dean of the Libraries.
